Ongoing activities of the EGP include:

1)            Growing Food Gardens: establishing new food-producing gardens on public land (approximately 1000 m2 of garden space) and connecting gardeners with garden space (Sharing Backyards).

2)            Sharing the Backyard Bounty: collecting approximately 1500 kg of locally grown produce from gardeners in the community, and distributing produce amongst 600 people in need.

3)            Building Strong Roots: Providing expanded education programs including; food gardening workshops and support for new gardeners. In 2009 we offered over 20 workshops, and all had extensive waitlists. In 2010 we hope to increase our capacity to better accommodate the demand from the community.

New programs that we hope to offer in 2010 need your support!

1)            ‘Growing Traditions’ – will be a garden mentorship program offered in partnership with the Sustainable Living Arts School that will connect elder gardeners with individuals and families who want to learn valuable skills around self-sufficiency and sustainable agriculture. Participants will then be able to share what they learned through casual learner driven ‘learning parties’.

2)            Social Housing Allotment Gardens – Our focus for garden development in 2010 will be the creation of garden space in social housing complexes to provide supported gardening opportunities for residents to help empower them to make ecologically based food choices. We will be working with BC Housing and Glen Valley Organic Farm as an education parter.

3)            Spuds in Tubs – We have been working with BC Agriculture in the Classroom over the past two years in offering the ‘Spuds in Tubs’ program for elementary school children. We would like to adapt this program to offer growing opportunities on patios for residents in high-density social housing complexes who do not have access to garden space. We hope build on our existing relationships with Metro Vancouver Housing and BC Agriculture in the Classroom on this initiative.

In order to offer these programs, we need your help. Make your secure donation to the Edible Garden Project (North Shore Neighbourhood House) through Canada Helps. click here.
